How to Beat Work Stress (and Get Away With It)

There are some who feel that a little stress is good. That if you didn’t have stress, your brain would never be challenged. What some do not realize is that it can get to be too much. It can be unbearable, and we want it to STOP. It can cause one to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, and trapped.

What Causes Work Stress?

So, why do we feel stressed when we are at work? Have there been times when you think, “I must be crazy, or is this job/my boss/my co-worker or this project nuts?”

Instead of knowing that a majority of people seem to find a specific situation stressful, we usually don’t have a way to measure how stressful the situation is, and we start to question ourselves.

We start to wonder if we are good enough, smart enough, are we doing something wrong, or are we missing something we should see? There is always different interpretations no matter what the situation, but the longer you look at the case and take a step back you will then be able to see the red flags, you will soon notice that what is going on is not all about you, but there are multiple players.

Below are a few ‘red flags’ that could lead to work stress or burnout.

  • Being on the front line, in high-stress settings
  • Having the feeling of powerlessness or no control
  • Overburdened with work
  • Resources are insufficient
  • Not enough training or supervision
  • Frustration bureaucracy brings
  • Strain and tension between co-workers
  • Conflicts over ethics
  • Perception of / or lack of fairness
  • Feeling isolated from family due to the traumatic nature of work
  • No opportunity for professional growth, reward, or promotion.

How to Control Burnout

Loss of control and feeling helpless can feel like actual torture and trauma that you must endure during your day at work, and they can have some of the same effects.

When you feel like you have no control over how you do your work and do not have adequate resources, your environment is hostile or not supportive then any red flags can lead to feelings of depression, health problems, helplessness, and anxiety.

It is true that in the modern workplace the tactics of bullies are used, and it creates a sense of helplessness and loss of control for those being bullied. It is said that it is not the intent of your boss or coworkers, but in many cases, it is true that is how they start. Once one starts the bullying, the rest seem to jump on, and everyone wants a bite of you.

There seems to be one thread of constant through all of it, and that is the “perception of you having little to no control and tons of demands; all of which have been associated with high blood pressure, increased number of heart attacks, and other health issues.”

Profiles of Those Who are Stressed at Work

We know people are all different with different personalities and therefore, different things cause people to stress. Just who are you at work?

Go-Getter Overlooked Employee: You seek out extra responsibility and work, thinking it will earn you some recognition but find out later it did not.

Underpaid/Overworked Employee: It is the classic scenario, the employee can take it on or has been given too much work, but is never compensated for it. The unfairness leads to stress and disappointment.

The Doormat Employee: This employee can never say no. They feel like they must take on every project handed them and do everything asked of them. They never object when others treat them like dirt; they usually give it some explanation or excuse for the other. The Doormat employee is too nice, and in the end, it costs them.

The Will Not Ask for Help/No Support Employee: This is the employee who is another one who is overworked, probably underpaid, but this person will never ask for help or things they need to get their job completed. They are always drowning in work and feel alone. They are afraid to ask for help because it will make them look like they cannot do their job.

The ‘Still There’ Employee: This employee is always working. They never leave work. They are last to leave the office, first to get there, and if they could, they would sleep there. They feel there is way too much to do, and no one but they can do it and do it right. Balancing home and the office becomes exceptionally stressful.

The Always-on-Call Employee: You can spot them anywhere as they are the ones that leave a restaurant to catch a phone call, miss dates with their friends due to working late, don’t watch the movie they are at because they are looking at their email. They do not know how to separate life and work; it makes them inattentive and unreliable. They do not even realize they have forgotten how to live because work has saturated their life.

Your Magician Employee: This person is expected to perform miracles while at work. They are asked to do more with less. Make contracts appear, pull up projects that have non-existence resources. The stress of doing more with less and fewer resources, and making more demands on your time can cause you to be very stressed. Administration learns quickly who their Magician employees are in the workplace.

The Invisible Employee: For this employee, nothing ever goes right. They are always passed over for a promotion. They never get recognized for doing a good job. They complain that their co-workers always steal their thunder. The invisible employee thinks he is trying hard but never gets anywhere and causes his stress to rise.

The Scapegoat Employee: This employee is the one everyone seems to blame everything on, and if you happen to be the scapegoat, it is stressful.

The Grouch Employee: What may be a reasonably decent place to work; the grouch sees as a terrible place to be. They always think they are being mistreated and are not satisfied with anything, they are soured on the whole business and can never see anything useful. The Grouch keeps staying in their job and keeps griping, the attitude they have spilled over into their entire life and they carry a constant frown.

The truth is that every job will have some stress that comes with it unless you can learn how to deal with it, you will suffer from the consequences. By understanding work stress and how you can deal with it, will help you manage your stress levels.
